Hi @Dan, maybe you are the right person to know the history about these sentences?
BTW, I found http://moin.delph-in.net/MatrixMrsTestSuiteTatoeba and I thought it would be nice to complete the experiment of adding the sentences to Tatoeba website. New natural translations would be useful, right? But we don’t have any answer for the license used by this test suite…
I think my student LiLing (now at Rakuten) put these in, I have CCed him. As far as I know, he seeded it but never did anything else.
The MRS testsuite is under the same licence as the grammar it came from, which is normally MIT.
I updated the wiki with MIT license assuming that Francis is probably right. The wiki is confusing since on the main page we have translations for Japanese and a relevant discussion about the structure of the set only at the bottom of the page. Moreover, in http://moin.delph-in.net/MatrixMrsTestSuiteEn links are all broken. Does anyone know what is this old server that the links like http://cypriot.stanford.edu/~bond/mrs-en060524/11.html point to? How can I help to make them work again?
I responded on Tatoeba:
tatoeba is being sensibly careful about copyright and suggesting that every sentence has a copy of the MIT sentence attached.
Dan: would you be prepared to allow them to relicense the sentences for tatoeba as ‘CC BY 2.0 FR’ to make them easier for people to use? I think it is a compatible license. I guess all it would need is a comment or email from you.
I had a hard time finding a license file for the data on the DELPH-IN website. Thank you for providing the link. Since the MIT license requires the license statement to be retained, it should be added as a comment for all sentences from the MRS test suite:
Stephan explained to me the different between the MRS test suite and the HP test suite. The latter was created to explore variation in syntactic structures and lives on in the DELPH-IN universe under the name CSLI test suite (since around 1994). The MRS test suite, on the other hand, exemplifies basic semantic constructions.
Given that, it would also be interesting to confirm if CSLI profile is MIT license. This is another useful collection of sentences to be added in Tatoeba? Only the grammatical ones?
BTW, I have just created a list https://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences_lists/show/166576.
